Why Don't You Get a Job?

It isn't one of the most pleasant questions to hear, but free-spirited types are often asked "Why don't you get a job?" Actually, there are very few genuinely lazy people in the world, and many adults who seem not to have professions are either artistic types who want to save their energy for creative pursuits, or women (and, increasingly, men) who would prefer to go without luxuries if it means devoted more time to raising their children. To those who ask "Why don't you get a job?" people in this category would answer, "Excuse me, I already have one."

There are other types of people who answer the question, "Why don't you get a job" by insisting, "I'm trying!" The implication is that the person is not trying hard enough, but compassion is needed when dealing with people who are having trouble finding work. Perhaps they are overqualified or underqualified for most types of jobs, or perhaps they don't interview well. A resume can be a decisive factor in whether one can get his foot in the door or not, so it is worth having someone check a resume.

Parents often ask their kids "Why don't you get a job?" They often don't understand why their children who were sent to the best schools, can't seem to find work. Basically, a lot of young adults are trying to "find themselves" or at least, are trying to avoid ending up in what they feel will be a "dead end job". It is best to encourage these young adults to explore their interests and ways to use their imagination to make money from their favorite pursuits.

Lastly, there are many happily employed people who are asked "Why don't you get a job?" They may work in fields that are unconventional or make money doing what most people just do in their spare time. They might regard such a question with a satisfied chuckle.
